Frosted Cupcake Cones

Photobucket

This week is March Break, aka Spring Break (for everyone who doesn't live in Ontario, LOL). Mr.B gets a whole week off, to relax and enjoy the warmer temperatures. The kids have already been wearing themselves out, by playing outside..... or maybe it's the time change. All I know is that they are tired and RAVENOUS. I am super lucky to have 2 children who are so interested in what I do in the kitchen. Not only are they interested, they also LOVE to help out. At least once a week, you can find all three of us, in the kitchen, making something or other. Whether it's washing vegetables for dinner, or helping me whip up a quick dessert, having the kids in the kitchen with me makes me confident that they will grow to be great eaters, and most importantly- they'll know how to cook, when they move out!

Letting your kids help in the kitchen, not only gives them confidence and pride that they are helping out, but it can also be turned into a fun learning experience. Measuring out can be a fun math lesson ( what do you think is bigger, 1 C or 1/2 C?), eggs and baking powder/soda can teach about science, decorating cupcakes or cookies is a great art lesson and gets creativity flowing. Let's not forget, it's a great opportunity to teach kids about healthy food, and healthy food choices!!

Cone cupcakes were always so exciting when I was little. I remember them being super popular at bake sales and you were always 'cool' if your Mom sent cone cupcakes, to school, for your birthday! So when I found these, and other Kid Friendly Recipes over on the Life Made Delicious website, I knew right away I wanted to make them with the kids. When I took the kids to the store, to buy some supplies for our baking day, they were thrilled to find out that we would be baking our cupcakes in ice cream cones. They quickly decided on what cake flavour, cones, frosting and toppings we needed. I love when they are so anxious to get into the kitchen with me. These are super easy to make and we had a blast decorating them. For this and more kid friendly recipes, visit the Life Made Delicious site!

Frosted Cupcake Cones
Adapted from Life Made Delicious

1 pkg (510 g) Betty Crocker* SuperMoist Cake Mix (any flavour)
water, oil and eggs as called for in cake mix directions
30 flat-bottom ice cream cones
1-2 tubs (450 g) Betty Crocker* Creamy Deluxe or Whipped Frosting (any flavour)
candy sprinkles for decorating

Heat oven to 350°F (180°C). Prepare cake batter according to package directions.

Fill each cone approximately 2/3 full of batter. Stand cones on large cookie sheet with sides (jelly roll type).

Bake 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cool completely on wire rack.

Spread with frosting and decorate as desired.

Store loosely covered.

Decorating Idea: Decorate with candies and cookies to create bugs and butterflies. Use small cookies or licorice candies for bodies, mini candy-coated chocolate candies for eyes and small pieces of licorice for legs and antennae.
